Eto'o & Messi expected to return soon
FC Barcelona players and fans got some great news for the holidays. Samuel Eto'o, who has been out with a knee injury since September, will return to training by the middle of January and Lionel Messi, who has been out since November with a foot injury, should start training at the beginning of February. Barça has missed both of these players up front and I'll be excited to see them return.

FC Barcelona ( 1 - 1 ) Atlético Madrid
FC Barcelona played their final game of the year to a 1-1 draw on Thursday as they faced off against Atlético Madrid. Ronaldinho (41’) put Barca in front just before halftime, with a free kick from right outside the box, shooting the ball across the face of the wall and into the far corner. Barça finished off 2007 in second place in the Spanish League 3 points behind Sevilla but they have a game in hand. It’s been a funky first half of the season for Barça. Injuries to the team have not helped their cause (Eto’o and Messi) but the team has managed to play well together and it seems like they’re starting to find their stride. I’m looking forward to the second half and hopefully some more silverware.

FC Barcelona ( 0 - 1 ) Internacional
FC Barcelona lost in the finals of the World Club Championship 0 to 1 on Sunday against Brazil’s Internacional. I have to commend Internacional on the job that they did on defense against Barça. Barcelona had more to score throughout the game than Internacional, but everytime Barça closed in on the net, the defense was able to shut them down. Barcelona’s defense was also quite strong and they didn’t allow the opposition many opportunities but Internacional made the best of the one good chance they did get when late in the game Adriano (82’) beat Valdez for the only goal of the game. A disappointing result to say the least but we’ll hopefully have another chance next year.

FC Barcelona ( 4 - 0 ) Club America
FC Barcelona moved into the finals of the World Club Championship with a 4 to 0 win over Mexico’s Club America. The two sides played each other over the summer during Barcelona tour of the U.S. but the results couldn’t have been any more different. Barça started the scoring early when Gudjohnsen (11’) connected with a Ronaldinho-Inesta pass to find the back of the net. Marquez (30’) made it 2-0 on a header by connecting with a Deco corner. Ronaldinho (65’) scored one of his own just after the hour and Deco (85’) finished off the flurry just before the final whistle. Barça will now face South American champions Internacional of Brazil in the final.

FC Barcelona ( 1 - 0 ) Real Sociedad
FC Barcelona maintained their lead atop the Spanish League this week with a 1 to 0 home win against Real Sociedad. Ronaldinho (61’) scored the only goal Barça needed just after the hour off of a Giuly cross. This brings his season goal total up to 11 and ties him for the league lead. Barça now head off to Japan for the World Club Championship.

FC Barcelona ( 2 - 0 ) Weder Bremen
FC Barcelona moves on to the second round of the Champions League after beating Werder Bremen 2 to 0 on Tuesday. Ronaldinho (13’) gave Barça the lead early in the game with a fantastic free kick sending the ball under two of the jumping defenders and into the net. Great idea - why shoot over the wall when you can just shoot under it instead. Gudjohnsen (19’) added his own goal just minutes later by side footing a well-placed pass from Giuly. Considering the pressure that Barça placed on the opposing goalkeeper throughout the game, Weder Bremen did well to walk away with the result that they got.

Levante ( 1 - 1 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona stayed on top of the Spanish League standings at the end of week 14 with a 1 to 1 draw against Levante. Deco (41') put Barça ahead just before the end of the first half with a superbly placed free kick that hit off the post and found it's way into the net. Frank Rijkaard decided to rest Rolandinho for this game in preparation of their must win Champions League game this Tuesday against Werder Bremen. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

FC Barcelona ( 4 - 0 ) Villarreal
FC Barcelona had an emphatic win this week with a 4 to 0 result against a visiting Villarreal. Ronaldinho (35' & 88') started and ended the scoring spree first with a nicely taken penalty kick in the first half and then with an even more impressive over the head goal just before the end of the game. This brings Ronaldinho goal total on the year up to 10 and makes him La Liga’s top scorer. Also scoring for Barça on the day were Gudjohnsen (55') and Iniesta (70'), both of whom have done a fantastic job of stepping up to the plate to pick up the slack of the injured Eto’o.

Levski Sofia ( 0 - 2 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona kept their Champions League hopes alive this week with a 2 to 0 win over Levski Sofia. Barça got off to a great early start when just minutes into the game Guily (4’) found himself all alone with the ball in front of the net and fired a low scorching shot to put Barcelona ahead. It ended up to be the only goal Barça would need to win but Inesta (64’) managed to double their lead after the Levski Sofia goalkeeper failed to corral a Deco shot from outside the box and left ball at Inesta’s feet to fire home. This means that FC Barcelona will now need to win their last game of group play against Weder Bremen at the Camp Nou in order to advance to the next stage.

Mallorca ( 1 - 4 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona goals by Gudjohnsen (42' & 58'), Iniesta (86'), Ezquerro (90').

FC Barcelona ( 3 - 1 ) Real Zaragoza
FC Barcelona goals by Ronaldinho (30' & 86') and Saviola (90').

Deportivo La Coruna ( 1 - 1 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona goal by Ronaldinho (39').

FC Barcelona ( 2 - 2 ) Chelsea
FC Barcelona goals by Deco (3') and Gudjohnsen (57').

FC Barcelona ( 3 - 0 ) Recreativo Huelva
FC Barcelona stays on top of the La Liga tables with a commanding 3 to 0 win over Recreativo Huelva this Saturday. Ronaldinho (28' & 57') led the way with a goal half way through the first half on a penalty kick and then doubled the score early into the second half with a header into the back on the net. Xavi (60’) then added to the Barça lead with a goal of his own just three minutes later to seal the victory. FC Barcelona play their next game this Tuesday at Camp Nou against Chelsea in Champions League play.

Badalona ( 1 - 2 ) FC Barcelona
An under strength FC Barcelona won the first leg of their Copa dey Rey match versus Badalona thanks to two second half goals by Gudjohnsen (63' & 78').

Real Madrid ( 2 - 0 ) FC Barcelona
Just days after their first loss of the season in Champions League play, FC Barcelona has suffered their first loss of the season in La Liga play going down to Real Madrid 2 to 0. Barça fell behind early when Raul put Madrid ahead just 3 minutes into the game with a header to the back of the net. Barça recovered from the early shocker and managed to put together some nice chances in the first half but to no avail. Madrid doubled their lead just 7 minutes into the second half on a Van Nistelrooy goal and Barcelona never found a way to respond. This hasn’t been the best week for Barça on the pitch but they need to forget what has happened and get ready for Recreativo Huelva on the 28th and Chelsea on the 31st.

Chelsea ( 1 - 0 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona suffered their first loss of the season in Champions League play today with a 1 to 0 loss against Chelsea. While Barça put on a decent first half performance, they were unable to find the back of the net. Chelsea scored their goal early in the second half and then managed to shut down the Barcelona attack for the rest of the game. Barça will have their chance at revenge during the return leg at the end of the month. Up next is the first game of the year against Madrid this Sunday.

FC Barcelona ( 3 - 1 ) Sevilla
FC Barcelona go clear on points for first place in La Liga for the first time this season with a 3 to 1 win over Sevilla. Barça won the game with 2 goals from Ronaldinho (28' & 39') and a late strike from Messi (81'). I don't have much of a commentary to give on the game because it wasn't shown on TV due to Sevilla's continuing TV contract dispute. This upcoming week is going to really exciting one for Barça fans. Barcelona takes on Chelsea on Wednesday in a first round Champions League game and then takes on Real Madrid on Sunday in their first encounter this season.

Athletic Bilbao ( 1 - 3 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona’s first game of the season without Eto’o, their leading scorer for the last 2 seasons, got off to a rocky start against Athletic Bilbao. Just 11 minutes into the game the home team took the lead on a goal by Yeste and appeared to be controlling the flow of the game as a whole until one of their defenders was sent off in the 19th minute. The game started to change for Barça in the 45th minute when Bilbao defender Ustaritz (45’) scored an own goal by redirecting a Gudjohnsen cross into his own net. Gudjohnsen (60’) then scored a goal of his own to put Barcelona ahead and Saviola (76’) capped things off with his first goal for the Blaugrana since leaving the team out on loan 2 years ago.

Werder Bremen ( 1 - 1 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona scored a vital late game equalizer to grab a 1 to 1 draw against Werder Bremen in their second game of Group A Champions League play. Barça looked like they were on their way to their first defeat in Champions League play for over 18 months after Puyol (56') scored an own goal while trying to clear the ball from the box. But late in the game, substitute Lionel Messi (89'), latched onto a fantastic pass from Deco to fire the ball home. The tie however was not the worst news of the day. In what will be a real blow to the team, Samuel Eto'o will be out of action for the next 5 months after injuring his knee in the 65th minute of play. He will be sorely missed and we wish him a speedy recovery.

FC Barcelona ( 1 - 1 ) Valencia
FC Barcelona moved into 1st place for the first time this year with a 1 to 1 draw against Valencia in a battle of unbeaten teams that was definitely an exciting game to watch. Barça ended the first half down a goal when in the 17th minute Valencia striker David Villa took a spot on pass from his teammate and managed to redirect it past Victor Valdez. The goal would not have happened had Zambrotta not missed his assignment and allowed the opportunity to occur - something that happened more than once during the game. Despite the score, Barcelona controlled the flow of the game for the most part and missed some excellent chances to put themselves on the board. The second half started off with a substitution when Barcelona brought on Andres Iniesta in place of Edmílson and Iniesta didn't take long to make his presence known. Just 4 minutes into the second half, Iniesta (49') struck home on a beautiful shot after receiving a pass that started with a Ronaldinho cross and an Eto'o header. Barça kept up the pressure all throughout the second half and missed several more opportunities to put themselves ahead. All in all a great game but Valencia should consider themselves lucky to walk away with a draw.

Racing Santander ( 0 - 3 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona kept on rolling in La Liga play with a 3 to 0 win over last place Racing Santander. Eto'o (18') was the first to score when he took a pass from Deco right outside the box and managed to fire it pass the Santander keeper on a funny bounce. This brings his total on the year up to 4 goals and ties him for the leading scorer position along with Frederic Kanoute of Sevilla. Even though they had quite a few other chances to score throughout the game, Barça had to wait quite a while for their next goal. Giuly (83') finally managed to double the score by defeating 3 defenders to find the back of the net and Ronaldinho (92') finished off the night with a goal of his own off of a penalty kick in injury time after Gudjohnsen was taken down inside the box by the Santander keeper.

FC Barcelona ( 5 - 0 ) Levski Sofia
Barça got off to a smashing start in their bid to repeat as European champions with a 5 to 0 win over Bulgarian team Levski Sofia. Barcelona needed only six minutes to score their first goal when Iniesta (6') took a nice pass from Eto'o and put the ball in the back of the net. Barça didn't let up then and Giuly (38') scored next on yet another pass from Eto'o shortly before the break and Puyol (48') scored one shortly after the break. After assisting on two other goals, Eto'o (57') got one of his own after some fancy footwork that left the Levski Sofia defense completely confused. Not to be left out of the scoring fiesta, Ronaldinho (90') scored one of his own right before the final whistle to cap off a wonderful night.

FC Barcelona ( 3 - 0 ) Osasuna
FC Barcelona played a great first home game with a 3 to 0 win on Saturday over Osasuna. Barça started the scoring early and often when just 2 minutes into the game Eto'o (2' and 26') took a nice pass from Ronaldinho to score his first of two goals for the night. This bring his total number of goals on the year in La Liga play up to three. Messi (36') also scored a goal in the first half and had at least one other opprotunity during the night to add to his total. Barça begin the defence of their Champions League crown at home against Bulgarian side Levski Sofia on Tuesday.

FC Barcelona and UNICEF
For the first time in it's 107 year history, FC Barcelona will carry a sponsors logo on the front of their shirts. But unlike all other clubs, Barça decided to use the opportunity to help others by inking the deal with the U.N. children's agency, UNICEF. As part of the deal, Barça will also donate $1.9 million a year over the next five years to help poor children with AIDS in developing countries.

 Celta Vigo ( 2 - 3 ) FC Barcelona
Barça fights back from a being a goal down to start off the second half to earn a 3 to 2 win at Celta Vigo in their opening game of the '06-'07 La Liga season. After a rough first half of a game (maybe still suffering from their thrashing at the hands of Sevilla) Barcelona came around and began to put some goals on the board. Eto'o (56') started off the scoring by driving a pass from Messi past the Celta keeper. Messi (60') scored one of his own just 4 minutes later and new signing Gudjohnsen (87') scored the game winner off the bench just minutes from time. All in all an action packed game and a great way to start off the season.

FC Barcelona ( 0 - 3 ) Sevilla
Well this was a game that certainly did not go as planned. FC Barcelona lost to Sevilla 0 - 3 in the Uefa Super Cup down in Monaco. Not having seen the game I can't really say what happened but from news reports it sounds like Sevilla were the stronger of the 2 teams right from the start. Well we didn't expext to win every game this year so lets lick our wounds and get ready for the start of the La Liga season.

Lightning strikes for the 3rd time
For the third time in a row Barcelona will face Chelsea in Champions League play. After playing each other in the second round for the last two year, this time they will face each other in first round Group Stage. Along with FC Barcelona, Group A will feature Chelsea,
Weder Bremen & Levski Sofia

FC Barcelona ( 4 - 0 ) Bayern Munich
Just days after winning Spanish Super Cup, FC Barcelona were back on the field against Bayern Munich playing for the Gamper Trophy. Even with only a few days of rest they looked fresh and clearly to be the better team. Barça started the scoring with a beautifully taken free kick by Ronaldinho (29') from right outside the box, Eto'o (32' & 39') followed with two wonderful goals of his own in rapid succession and Saviola (50') finished off the day with one of his own shortly after the break. Barcelona plays their next game against Sevilla this Friday in Monaco for the European Super Cup and then start the '06 - '07 La Liga campaign on the 28th
against Celta Vigo.

FC Barcelona ( 3 - 0 ) Espanyol
FC Barcelona picks up their first piece of silverware of the season by winning the Spanish Super Cup with a 3-0 win, 4-0 on aggregate, over cross-town rivals Espanyol.  The scoring started early when just 3 minutes into the game Xavi (3') scored on a nice header off of a Ronaldinho pass.  Deco (12' & 61') then doubled the score for Barça just 9 minutes later with his first of two goals for the game, the second goal coming in the second half on a nice overhead kick.  Barcelona plays Bayern Munich next for the Gamper Trophy.

Espanyol ( 0 - 1 ) FC Barcelona
Barça kicked off the '06-'07 season tonight with the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup against current Spanish Cup holders Espanyol at the Montjuich Stadium. The only goal of the night came from Giuly (43') when he took a wonderful pass from Ronaldinho and fired past the advancing Espanyol goalkeeper. The second half saw Barça miss some very good chances to add to their lead - especially Messi who was denied a goal on 2 occasions. The second leg of the Cup will be played this Sunday at Camp Nou.

Red Bull New York ( 1 - 4 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona has wrapped up their North American pre-season campaign with a 1-4 win over the MLS team Red Bull NY. Playing to their 4th sell-out crowd in a row, Barça received a tremendous welcome from the overwhelmingly pro-Barcelona crowd and the players repaid the fans by putting on a great display of football. After a slow scoring start in the first half, Barça broke apart the Red Bull defense with some lightning quick strikes from second half replacement Lionel Messi. Barça scored on goals by Ronaldinho (13'), Ronaldinho (51'), Messi (60') & Saviola (86'). All in all this tour has been a great success for Barça by helping them promote not only the team but also promoting good football.

Club America ( 4 - 4 ) FC Barcelona
Well now that was a game!  After 3 pre-season games that seemed little more than a practice sessions, Barça's game against Club America was full of fireworks.  After being down 4-1 with only minutes to play in the game, FC Barcelona put together a string of goals and ended the game with a tie.  Saviola (84') started the scoring with a shot from 50 feet out, Ronaldino (88') followed with a penalty kick, and Eto'o (91') finished the job with a beautiful header in injury time. Márquez (5') scored the first goal early in the game to tie the game at 1-1 after an even earlier goal from Cuevas (his first of 3 on the night).  Their final game on the U.S. tour is this Saturday in NYC against the MLS Red Bull NY.  I'm going to this one and I'm looking forward to it!

Chivas of Guadalajara ( 1 - 1 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona played their first of three friendlies in the US to a 1-1 draw this Sunday against Chivas of Guadalajara. While Barça started off the first half a bit slow, they eventually did find their rhythm and by the end of the game they were clearly the better team. Barcelona's only goal was scored by Gudjohnsen (73') after he left footed his own rebound into the net after it initially bounced off the post. Their next game is this Wednesday in Houston against Club America.

Club Tigres ( 0 - 3 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona won their second pre-season game in a row with a 3 goal win over Mexican team Club Tigres.  Unlike the game against Aarhus, this game featured most of the first string players and we even saw Javier Saviola come on as a substitute in the second half.
Barcelona's goals were scored with own goal by Balderas (7'), a beautiful free kick by Ronaldinho (70') and the first goal of hopefully many to come by Gudjohnsen (77').  The next stop for Barça is L.A. where they will face Chivas de Guadalajara.

AGF Aarhus ( 0 - 3 ) FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona started their new season off with a win in a pre-season friendly against the Danish team AGF Aarhus.  While many of
Barça's top players such as Eto', Belletti & Valdes did not play, the game did feature several of Barça's new signings such as Gudjohnsen and Dos Santos.  Barcelona's goals were scored by Dos Santos ('18), Ezquerro ('38) & and own goal by Schultz ('60).  Barça's next friendly will be against Mexican team Club Tigres on August 4th.

Barça getting ready to tour the U.S.
FC Barcelona is getting ready for its upcoming U.S. tour.  Barça is scheduled to play Mexico's Chivas de Guadalajara on August 6th in Los Angeles, Mexico's Club America on August 9th in Houston, and the MLS New York Red Bulls on August 12th.  I have tickets for the game in New York and I just hope the game doesn't end up too one-sided.

FC Barcelona sign Thuram & Zambrotta
Barcelona has managed to sign Juventus defenders Lilian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta following the Italian club's relegation to Serie B.  Thuram, 34, has signed a two-year deal, while the Zambrotta, 29, has signed a four-year contract.  Media reports suggest that Barca has paid a combined fee of 19 million euros for the two players.

FC Barcelona ( 2 - 1 ) Arsenal
Campeones! Campeones! Ole Ole Ole!!!

Barcelona wins the Champions League and shows that they are by far the best club in Europe if not the World.  It was an action packed game from the beginning with Arsenal's goalkeeper shown a red card in the 19th minute, after a hard foul on Eto'o outside the box, forcing them to play a man down for the rest of the game.  Arsenal were the first to score when in the 37th minute, Campbell (37') headed home a free kick that should never have been allowed.  In what had to have been the most blatant dives I've ever seen, Arsenal's Eboue - with nobody around him - decided to fall on the ground and was awarded a free kick for his efforts.

In the second half Barça really began to attack and you could tell it would just be a matter of time before they found the back of the net.  Eto'o (75') fired the equalizer close in against the back-up goalie and Belletti (79') scored the game winner a few minutes later after the Arsenal goalie deflected a harmless cross into the net.

Now for anyone who may have thoughts of Thierry Henry joining Barça next season, I think you can probably put the idea right out of your head.  After the match Henry made the following comments: "They (Barcelona) are not used to the pace of the Premiership and the ref -- if he didn't want us to win it just say so right from the start. Sometimes some calls in the game were a bit strange" - "Some of the referee's decisions today were horrendous. Next time I should learn how to dive maybe but I'm not a woman so I stay on my feet." - "All the time you talk about Ronaldinho but I didn't see him today. I saw Henrik Larsson... and that was the key to the game. Henrik Larsson turned in two assists."  Well that was rather douche-baggy of him and I assume will rule out any chance of him playing for Barcelona next season.  Oh well who cares what he has to say because we're the ..........

Campeones! Campeones! Ole Ole Ole!!!
